What does doTERRA Serenity do?
This is our doTERRA Serenity review. This softgel supplement has claims to promote:
But how well will it work for you?
In this assessment, we look more intently at the ingredients and side effects (if any) associated with this supplement. We also provide out critique and suggestions on how this supplement could be improved.
doTERRA Serenity Ingredient Information
The first thing to note is that it contains a proprietary blend. A proprietary blend is when a supplement manufacturer chooses to hide individual dosages of their ingredients.
This means you don’t know exactly how much of each ingredient you’re getting. It’s a lack of transparency by the manufacturer which stops you from knowing how effective it truly is.
It also raises issues of whether certain ingredients are under-dosed.
Luckily this is a dying practice as consumers are becoming more informed – but for now this is still a concern when looking at supplements like this.
Below, we look at the main ingredients in doTERRA Serenity along with our views and how they may be able to be improved.
Take a look:
This is a nice addition to doTERRA Serenity, although we feel more research into it is needed.
Lavender is usually used in aromatherapy to help promote sleep – it isn’t usually used in supplements. However, it may still be able to help here.
When combined with Lemon Balm (a nutrient which is also in this supplement) it can help to improve your overall levels of GABA. GABA is a hormone in your body that helps to reduce anxiety while promoting calmness and relaxation.
With all these benefits combined, they can help you get into a much better mindset which can help make it easier for you to fall into a sound sleep.
This is another good addition in this doTERRA Serenity supplement. L-Theanine is an amino acid which is great for helping with sleep.
It doesn’t directly promote sleep, but it is good for helping your body access the right conditions to make sleep easier.
The L-Theanine in doTERRA Serenity can help improve your overall levels of the hormone GABA which reduces anxiety and promotes calmness.
This can help put your mind into a more laid back state – which is perfect for helping you drift off to sleep.
Now we enter the proprietary blend. From here on out, none of the dosages in doTERRA Serenity are disclosed.
A nice touch in doTERRA Serenity, and one that works well with the Lavender in this supplement.
Lemon Balm is nutrient that was originally claimed to work like a nootropic and boost cognitive performance. However, further studies haven shown that this is not the case.
But, they did find that Lemon Balm is great for improving calmness and relaxation, while reducing anxiety. It can help the Lavender in here to raise your levels of GABA. In doing so, you can feel much calmer and in a better mental position to fall asleep after getting into bed.
Usually used in nighttime teas and a great addition to doTERRA Serenity. It doesn’t directly promote sleep – but like many of the ingredients in this supplement, it can help to create the right environment.
Passionflower is rich in Apigenin. Apigenin is a component in herbs like this which can help promote calmness and reduce anxiety.
Again, this can help get you into a better mindset for getting to sleep, and a good option here.
Another Apigenin source in doTERRA Serenity. Chamomile is a herb that is also commonly used in evening teas.
It can help reduce your overall levels of anxiety which can help to make you calmer and more relaxed. This can help you fall asleep easier by the time you get into bed.
It’s a good support to the passionflower in here and can help boost your overall levels of the compound to get you to sleep easier.
On the whole, there are some good choices in this supplement – many of which can help reduce anxiety, promote relaxation and generally help give you a good mental environment to sleep in.
However, we do take issue with the proprietary blend. You don’t know how much of each ingredient you’re getting – which makes it difficult for us to know how effective it really is.
It’s also worth noting that there’s nothing in here which promotes melatonin, nor is there anything which can help with reducing overnight disturbances.
If we could offer some improvements to this supplement, we believe Tart Cherry, L-Tryptophan and Mangesium would all be good additions.
Tart Cherry contains natural melatonin – which is your body’s sleep hormone. It can help signal to your body that it’s time for you to go sleep – directly promoting slumber.
Same goes for L-Tryptophan. Your body converts it into serotonin, which promotes your mood, and then again into melatonin, which promotes sleep.
Finally, Magnesium helps to reduce your body’s muscular impulses overnight – which can reduce twitches and jerks. This stops you from waking yourself up involuntarily in the middle of the night.
This would all help significantly improve doTERRA Serenity.
Side Effects – Are there any in doTERRA Serenity?
We don’t think so, all the ingredients in here are natural and don’t have links to promoting side effects, especially at these dosages.
You shouldn’t run into any trouble.
That said, if you do have any concern, we suggest you speak to your doctor before taking it. Everyone is different when it comes to supplements, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
doTERRA Serenity Summary
Overall, this supplement does have some benefits but we do have some concerns.
Our main concern here is the proprietary blend. Without knowing the full dosages, it’s difficult to know how effective this supplement really is.
On top of that, we think a few ingredients that help promote natural melatonin would really improve it to, rather than ingredients that just promote relaxation.
It still has some benefits, but we think there are better options out there.
